Northwest Highway 3 Bridges Project

Proposed improvements for the Northwest Highway 3 Bridges Project include replacing three separate bridges with one long bridge. The bridge will be raised six to eight feet due to the area's historic flooding issues.

Construction

The construction began in August of 2009 and is estimated to be completed in April of 2012.

TxDOT partnered with the City of Dallas and Dallas County, which contributed approximately $2 million dollars to the $32 million dollar project, for a special aesthetics package. This includes additional stonework, bike trail railings and allowance for hike/bike trail in TxDOT right of way.

Closures

The closure of the intersection of West Lawther Road and Northwest Highway is scheduled to begin July 13, 2010, and will continue for a year.

  • Lawther Road will be raised to meet the six-foot elevation of Northwest Highway.
  • Upon completion of the project, cyclists will be able to bypass traffic at the at-grade crossing and pass underneath Northwest Highway.
  • TxDOT is assisting the City of Dallas to identify alternate routes for cyclists. At this time, it appears cyclists coming from the south will have the option to travel east on Mockingbird Lane.

Public Involvement

Public meetings have been held with community groups, homeowner's associations and businesses to gain input, provide information and incorporate feedback.
